It is very easy to make a lampshade with punched-tin pattern. You can find tin sheeting at jewelry-maker supply centers or craft stores.
Step 1. Cut the tin sheet to the size of the lampshade you want to make.
- Fit a piece of paper around the lampshade form.
- Cut it to the size you want the shade to be.
- Use the paper as a pattern for the tin.
- Wear protective gloves.
- Make the tin slightly larger than the shade form to overlap the edges to secure it to the shade.
- Use the sandpaper to sand the edges.
At craft centers or some hardware stores, you can find punches which can remove round, heart-shaped or other patterns of holes from the tin.
Step 2. Draw the design for the inside the lampshade.
Step 3. Put a few layers of old newspaper on a sturdy table. Placing the tin foil side up on the newspaper, which can prevent you from punching holes in your tabletop.
Step 4. Along the lines you drew, punch holes in the tin at regular intervals. Position the point of the awl or ice pick on the line. Use hammer to tap it to secure it. Tap harder to make the hole. Make sure that all holes should be a uniform size and evenly spaced to look the best.
Step 5. Bend the edges around the lampshade frame wire. Then, use pliers to cinch it. To give it a more finished look, you need to burnish the folds around the wire form.
Always wear protective gloves and keep children away from your work area because the edges of metal sheeting are very sharp.
