Want to create a lamp shade for your perfectly decent lamp? First, you need to create the frame, and then cover it with fabric or decorate it with beads.
Build the Frame with wire
Step 1. Look for the wires.
Choose a wire which is sturdy enough to hold its shape but pliable enough to be bent. You can use wire hangers to create lampshade frame. First, untwist and straighten wire hangers out.
Step 2. Measure the diameter of the bottom of the lampshade.
You can directly use the measurements of your old lampshade. Or, you can cut out several pieces of paper in circles, and then hold them over the lamp to choose the best size for the bottom of the lampshade.
Step 3. Determine the diameter of the top of the lampshade.
If you don’t know what size is best for the top diameter of the lampshade, you can use circular pieces of paper to play around with and then choose a suitable size. Choose the desired size as you like. For instance, you can create a tapered lampshade that is smaller at the top and larger at the bottom.
Step 4. Create two circles for the top and bottom of the lampshade frame.
Both old lampshade and circular pieces of paper as a pattern can help you know the size of
wire circles. Each end only requires one piece of wire. You can twist the wire around into a circle of the right size, then twist the ends together with pliers and clip off the excess wire. If you like a vine-like appearance, you can wind the excess wire around on itself.
Step 5. Determine the distance between the top and bottom of the lampshade
Raise two circles and measure the ideal distance between them. If you want to the lightbulb gives a diffused light, make sure the lampshade is at least a few inches above and a few inches below the lightbulb
Step 6. Increase the height of the lampshade.
Cut approximately 10 wires into the right length you determined above. Increase the total height of the lampshade by 4 inches, and then connect the vertical pieces of wire to the circles you just created.
Step 7. Attach each vertical piece of wire to the top circle of lampshade frame.
Wind the 2 inches of wire from the vertical piece around the wire circle two or three times. Use pliers to press the end in firmly. Spread the vertical lines evenly around the top circle.
Step 8. Attach the other end of the vertical pieces to the wire circle that is the bottom of your lampshade frame. Please use the method in step 7 above.
Decorate with Beads
Step 1. Create a string of beads that is long enough to reach from the top to the bottom of the shade.
Step 2. Tie knots at each end to keep the beads in the center of the string.
Step 3. Attach the line to the top and bottom circles of the lampshade.
Step 4. Repeat the 3 steps above to cover the frame.
Cover with Fabric
Step 1. Measure the distance between each vertical line on the lampshade frame.
Step 2. Cut the strip of fabric into the width just measured and the length from the top to the bottom of the lampshade. Besides, add two extra inches for the length.
Step 3. On the longer sides, use ribbon or trim to hem or edge each strip of fabric
Step 4. You should roll one extra inch over the wire circle and then affix it with staple gun, hot glue gun, or needle and thread to attach the fabric strips to the top of the lampshade. There should be have one fabric strip in between each vertical wire piece.
Step 5. Do as the step 4 above to attach the fabric strips to the bottom of the lampshade.
Tip: You also can use wide strips of ribbon to cover the frame as long as you cut to the appropriate length and attach to wire circles.
